English for Active Listening - Summer School

Strong listening skills are essential for success in the workplace and beyond. This course will help you develop active listening techniques to boost your productivity, strengthen relationships, and enhance your ability to influence, persuade, and negotiate.

Objetivos Especificos

This course aims at:
-raising awareness on the interactive nature of the listening process and on what it is expected from students when they encounter a listening activity.
-teaching and model the different strategies that can be put into practice when listening to a text in English.
-establishing a clear link between listening abilities and other areas of ESL study such as pronunciation, speaking and vocabulary.
-providing students with an opportunity to listen to a wide variety of authentic listening/video listening materials. Graded recordings will be used when appropriate.
-providing students with input on topics connected to everyday contexts and areas of their interests and experience through content units, with the objective of building up a vocabulary bank and set of ideas about each area while at the same time working on improving their listening comprehension abilities.
-emphasizing the importance of linguistic and non linguistic clues (socio-cultural, background knowledge, intonation, stress) as relevant to achieve a better understanding of oral English.
-drawing students‘ attention to the different rhythm of English and the importance of word stress.
-working with word boundaries and features of connected speech to aid students in the listening tasks.
-exposing students to a variety of accents.
-promoting students metacognitive strategies when they are faced with a listening task so as to maximize their learning outcomes.
-encouraging students to use strategies whenever information is not stated, has been missed or they do not know the meaning of a word.

UTEC - Certification Medal

Tipo de certificado de aprobación

1- Completar el 100% de las tareas ofrecidas en cada módulo.
2- Obtener un mínimo de 70% en el total del puntaje.
Las actividades equivalen a un 70% del puntaje final.
La pruebas equivalen a un 30% del puntaje final.

Participante

Estudiantes que deseen mejorar su nivel de inglés a nivel de comprensión auditiva. Se recomienda para estudiantes con nivel A2 o superior.

Cuerpo Docente

Maria Noel Maquieira

Docente Encargada de Inglés en el Departamento de Lenguas de UTEC desde 2016 y referente del Programa de Lenguas en el ITR Centrosur. Profesora de Inglés egresada del Instituto de Profesores Artigas y Traductora Pública por la Universidad de la República (UDELAR). Cuenta con experiencia docente en instituciones públicas y privadas desde 2004.
Diplomada en Digital Technologies for Language Teaching and Learning por la Universidad de Nottingham, actualmente cursa la Maestría en Lengua Inglesa y Educación Intercultural Bilingüe en la Universidad de Montevideo.

Victoria Soumastre

Docente de educación media en instituciones públicas y privadas desde 2008. Ex-becaria Fulbright. Docente de español como lengua extranjera en EEUU durante 2015-2016. Docente encargada de inglés en el ITR SO (Mercedes y Fray Bentos). De Mercedes, viviendo en Montevideo. Cursando una Maestría en Metodologías Activas de Enseñanza en UCU.
